João Nuno Brochado was born in 1983 in Porto, Portugal, within a family strongly related to the arts. He quickly gets interested in photography and cinema and at age 9, while visiting the Moving Image Museum in London, decides what he wants to proceed when he grows up. At the age of 15 João creates his first documentary about the S. João National Theatre, for a school project. In 2001 he enrols in the School of Arts of the Catholic University of Portugal, where he graduates in Sound and Image and later got a Master Degree specializing in Cinema and Audiovisual. During those years he works in documentaries, commercials, live events and cinema, and his final project “TAX FREE” was selected for more than 20 festivals and won several awards. In 2006 he did a New York Film Academy’s workshop, and later was an teacher assistant there. He also did an internship at Utopia Filmes studios, in Lisbon.

In 2007, his entrepreneurial spirit led him with 3 colleagues to create Cimbalino Filmes studios in Porto. There he has been directing and producing projects: promotional films for brands like Vodafone, SuperBock, McDonald’s, Renault, Salsa, Port Wine but also television shows, music videos and short-films like the awarded “Tokyo Porto 9 hours” and “Down to the Sea”. He also participated in the creation of multiple virtual scenarios in video mapping technique, for theatre plays, concerts and events.

In 2014 João releases his first feature documentary “A Man Sized Mountain” which was nº1 top sales and sold out after only 3 weeks.

At the same time, João started his academic career as a visiting professor in 2008 at the School of Arts of Catholic University of Portugal, and then in 2016 at the Faculty of Creative Industries of the University of Saint Joseph, in Macau.
